Pelosi, Drilling, and the McCain Campaign

Today's Washington Post contains an even-tempered editorial urging Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to allow a vote in the House of Representatives on renewing off-shore drilling. As part of a balanced strategy to promote energy diversity, increased domestic oil production makes a lot of sense. I applaud the Post for taking this stance.

Additionally, I see here a tactical crevice for the McCain campaign to exploit more effectively, and that is the Pelosi/Obama nexus. Nancy Pelosi is the quintessential "San Francisco Democrat" of Jeanne Kirkpatrick's musing. McCain should be HAMMERING home the policy similarities between Senator Obama and Speaker Pelosi at every opportunity. McCain needs to energize the base, and Speaker Pelosi is an obvious target.

It would also be a good time to bring up the 18% approval rating for Congress. Interesting that figure never enters the news while the President's is almost always on the scrolling ticker.
