Powell and Obama

I think Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama comes from a good place, and should be taken as yet another sign of the growing sense of inevitability of his ascendancy to the White House. Colin Powell is a great American with a lifetime of service we should all honor. I don't agree with his choice here, but General Powell's never been a hardcore conservative Republican, so his endorsement of Senator Obama shouldn't be a huge shock.

The drumbeat of criticism of the Palin choice (hit hard by Powell) is getting louder and louder. My sense is that had she not so supremely tanked in her TV interviews, this would not be the story it is. She definitely gave the other side the ammo it needed, and when it is all said and done, a choice that seriously excited me politically may turn out to have been John McCain's worst mis-step.

Don't despair. Palin was savaged mercilessly and written off as an ignorant failure long before she sat down in front of Katie Couric. Come on, the woman runs a state...is responsible for an 11 billion dollar budget...has 24,000 employees...and does it with an 80% approval rating. Could this be pulled off by an incompetent? NO! The McCain campaign just royally screwed up rolling her out.
I found much of Colin Powell's explanation this morning curious. He decried the 'attacks' on Obama, yet he apparently has no problem with the attacks on Palin. He had all the DNC talking points about Ayers and 'he was 8 years old.' He resented the 'he's a Muslim' slurs-has that come from the McCain campaign? He thought McCain was 'erratic' during the financial crisis. What is it Obama did during the financial crisis other than vote 'present'? While I respect Gen Powell, I really think this was a black man endorsing a black man. I'm sure that makes me a racist.
I wish he would have picked Romney too, but in all sincerity, there may have been nothing to save a Republican this year.

Well a little loyalty would be nice. The man was promoted to General (4 stars) by Republicans and served in a Republican administration. He, by all accounts, is a Republican. If Obama were a moderate Democrat (there are no conservative Democrats) one could possibly justify the endorsement. As it stands now I have to think it's just some sort of misguided racial pride. As Limbaugh said, how many white liberals has he ever endorsed?

Was it that Governor Palin tanked in the interviews, or was it that our elite, northeast biased, left leanining media was so intent upon ensuring that she did not get to come across as very capable? The elite northeast biased, lefty media could (and do on occasion)make Jesus Christ look bad when they are so inclined. Had they put as much time and effort into spotlighting Senator Obama's shortcomings he would have been a footnote to the 2008 presidential elections.

I simply can't go as far as you do, Smoothfur. Palin wasn't prepared for those interviews because she simply didn't/hadn't spent time thinking deeply about international and national issues before being tapped for VP. No that that is bad...she was being paid to run a state, not be Attorney General. That said, her performances, especially in the Couric interviews (gotta stand up for a fellow Wahoo here...her questions were NOT unfair. That the same scrutiny had not been paid to Obama is immaterial. The questions were fair ones) were not up to par--and they fed the existing perception that she was not ready for primetime. She's made a bit of a comeback, but the damage is done.

Hardcore conservative Republican? You Navy guys must have a different take on what that is. Powell is a moderate (wishy washy) Republican at best. You know, the country club Ivy League Northeastern Establishment Republican. In other words the enemy.

Don't you mean, "In other words, the other half of the Republican party"?

No. I think he means the Republicans who believe in evolution.
