David Frum's decided that the Republican money machine should cut John McCain loose in favor of maintaining at least 41 seats in the Senate, based largely on where McCain/Palin finds itself in the polls. I'm not hostile to this idea; in fact, I advocated it here in this blog last week. What I am hostile about is the vessel carrying this message. Frum abandoned this campaign weeks ago when he savaged John McCain for having the temerity to pick someone who didn't look and sound like him for VP.
It is a wonder that this campaign has come to signifiy a point in our history in which a man who blew other people up in an anarchic Marxist movement is considered by some to be more of a political examplar than someone who only governs a state.

What I find most puzzling is the obvious reason that Sarah Palin is a considered a 'drag' on the ticket. Do Americans think she's unfit because they've studied her record or listened to her speeches? No, they think she's unfit because virtually every news outlet is trumpeting what an idiot she is. Yes, she came across as one in the Couric interview. But she in no way has deserved the abuse she's taken. These newscasters gleefully report the poll results that show Americans think she's unqualified--and take no ownership of their degree of responsibility for those poll numbers.
Sally--I"m not convinced that Palin will wind up a net negative. But you're right; she's been SAVAGED, and very little of it was fair. She's got as much experience as the Democratic Nominee for President, but her experience doesn't fit the liberal narrative. Clearly, had she produced only one child (and maybe aborted one or two more), married an activist for Eskimo issues, and believed drilling in ANWR were anathema, she'd be seen as the Democratic Everywoman, authentic and real.
Right, but you're missing my point. Pundits proudly state polls showing Americans don't think she's qualified, as if it validates their abuse of her. But if these same pundits were extolling her virtues instead of shredding her, I firmly believe the polls would show something far different.
You're probably right. And I sometimes wonder if people are telling pollsters the truth about her...I think more people like her than are letting on.
