The Senate and the Wisdom of the Founders

Word today that the stimulus bill lacks the votes necessary to pass in the Senate. Moderates on both sides of the aisle are coming together to try and trim non-stimulative spending from the bill in order to gain more bipartisan support.

I applaud this effort, and I urge Senate Republicans to keep the press on. Continue to come forward with new ideas and most of all....WORK with Democrats. John McCain has offered a $445B stimulus option of his own, which could serve as a good point of departure. Republicans are winning the battle of public opinion as more and more Americans question the urgency of the vast majority of the spending in this bill.

President Obama is on the verge of making a huge, early mistake...and that is misinterpreting the meaning of his election. He was elected to fix the economy, because Americans trusted that he had a better plan to do so. So be it. He was NOT elected to turn on the spigot for spending billions of dollars on payback initiatives from Democrats frustrated in being out of power so long. If he oversteps his mandate, he will needlessly spend political capital on a losing effort.

The Senate was conceived as a deliberative body, an organ of the states (as we discussed last week) with six year terms of office to encourage broad views and to act as a brake on the passions of the more immediately accountable House. The Senate is doing its job, and we should applaud it as it does so.

Very nicely written. I especially liked your third paragraph on overstepping his mandate. I hope he reads TCW immediately following his daily intelligence briefing and his daily economic briefing.
