You heard right, sandwiches have been declared racist by a Portland area school principal, a Ms. Verenice Gutierrez. One of the many "wise latinas" our country has shamefully exploited for eons, Principal Gutierrez asked the burning question most educators are too afraid to ask: "What about Somali or Hispanic students who might not eat sandwiches?". She courageously singled out the flagrantly provocative PB&J for its inherent cultural insensitivity and bias. Clearly she has a keen eye for the subtleties of pre-adolescent culinary preferences as it relates to "white privilege". We're so lucky to have a person like this teaching our children.

UVA 17 Penn State 16

I have never witnessed an uglier win in Virginia history. Not one.  The circumstances involved in this game and the place Penn State finds itself are well known to all, but on the field, both teams were ugly and could not execute.

The story of the game for Penn State is four missed field goals and a missed extra point.  Penn State outplayed Virginia...UVA could not run the ball....UVA could not pressure Penn State's quarterback....UVA's defense might as well have just stayed on the field, as efficient as the offense was.

But UVA won anyway...this is a game most UVA teams would have lost.  Mike London has his players in a good frame of mind, but frames of mind won't beat Georgia Tech, TCU, Florida State or Virginia Tech.  Those teams will roll UVA up if we can't figure out how to run and pressure the opposing quarterback.

On the plus side?  It was a beautiful day (until the last two minutes, when the rain gods delivered on the promise of the weather report), my two best friends in the world were there, and the University remains firmly placed in the center of the known universe. 

What Mitt Must Do

Well, both conventions have played out, each had its ups and downs, and the race is still essentially tied.  There are a lot of (especially Conservative) writers who continue to bemoan the fiction that Romney should be up by a dozen points in this economy, but that meme ignores three factors--how popular Obama was and is, the extent to which the American public does in fact blame George Bush for the mess, and the relatively free ride Obama gets from the Bought and Paid For Media (seems the "fact checkers" were a bit less aggressive last week, no?).  Romney--it must be remembered, has to beat both his opponent and the media.  Additionally, it must be remembered that an incumbent President has a lot of institutional support--witness the fact that Jimmy Carter was up by four points in September 1980.

Romney simply cannot leave the election up to a recitation of the "are better off today than you were four years ago" question, because there often is no simple answer to that question.  Four years ago things were bad, but what was REALLY bad was the knowledge that we were close to something catastrophic.  Four years later, the catastrophe is remote, but the dysfunction remains.  I have written many times in this blog that the impact of the Great Recession was relatively concentrated in those who actually LOST their jobs/homes.  For the rest of the population, inflation was minimal, interest rates were low, and gas prices were manageable (were--not so much anymore).  Put another way, while things suck right now, the prospect of full melt-down does not seem to motivate voters--so by that measure, things ARE better for some. 

No, what Romney must do is continue to hammer home the distinctions between him and the President.  The debates will be critical to this effort, as will the windfall of money he has and can now spend.  Simply put, Romney must steamroll the President and spend him into oblivion.  What should the themes of the campaign be?

1.  Continue to hammer the Obama plan to cut Medicare to fund Obamacare.  Romney must have channel Paul Ryan and become a master of the facts surrounding both the Republican plan for Medicare and the Obama Administration plan to cut it.

2.  Tax Reform.  Romney must get more specific here, explaining how it is that he will reform the tax code by cutting rates by 20% for all and cutting the corporate tax rate--and remaining "revenue neutral".  He MUST begin to talk about the kinds of loopholes and deductions he will either close or means test.  His entire plan rests on the proposition that simplifying the tax code is good and pro-growth, and that the price of that simplification is to squeeze revenue out of the system by limiting the extent of deductions available to high income earners.  He doesn't have to lay out a 59 point plan, but he does have to have a few relatively painless "for instances" for the debates, to that he can reel out facts when Obama goes on the attack.

3.  Healthcare.  He simply MUST come up with a persuasive, believable, logical and simple answer to the absolute, metaphysical certainty that Obama goes after him on Romneycare as predicate to Obamacare. He must have a few, simple, popular answers to what he would replace Obamacare with.  This answer should drive him back to his Romneycare answer, which should include empowering the states to pursue innovative solutions free from federal mandate, and removing federal mandates from the exercise of that innovation.  Additionally, Romney MUST find a way to INSPIRE on healthcare.  One of my Navy mentors passed along an idea that I've sent up to the campaign that I'll share here--he suggested that Romney get out in front of a healthcare stretch goal--something on the order of "curing Alzheimer's and or Cancer" in ten years.  I think this is genius--and I hope the campaign latches onto it. 

4.  Grow the economy/debt/deficit/budget.  Romney must talk about growth.  All the time.  We can't simply slice the pie differently, we have to grow the pie.  He needs to point out where the President has been anti-growth.  He needs to make the simple, logical case that if the economy grows faster than the cuts in he rate of government spending as a percentage of GDP, government shrinks and the the tide rises.

5.  National Security.  Give Obama muted props where he deserves them, hammer him where he doesn't.  Continue to drive home the "say-do" mismatch on the Pivot to Asia.  Remind everyone of the political capital expended by the Poles and the Czechs on missile defense, and how the Obama team pulled the rug out from under them.  Remind the public of how dangerous Iran remains and how little Obama does and has done.  Remind the American public that the only functioning and relatively reliable ally we have in the Middle East is Israel, and how Obama continues to devalue that relationship. Don't give ground here.

6.  Continue to make it "safe" to reverse your Obama vote.  This is something I've seen the campaign doing very effectively, and that is, creating the narrative that there was so much hope, so much excitement, so much promise--heck, we understand why you voted for the guy in 2008.  But he's had his chance, he's failed, he has to go (thanks, Clint).

Romney can win this election, but it is going to be tough.  The electoral map favors Obama, and the media will fight Romney all the way. 

Fasten your seatbelts, it is going to get bumpy.

Ain't it Great! The Dems Saved the American Auto Industry

I'm getting a little tired of the Democrats crowing about how they saved the car business. For 50 long years the Democrats have relentlessly attacked Detroit. Since Ralph Nader's scurrilous "Unsafe at Any Speed" libeling Chevrolet's Corvair (later proved false by the NHTSA), liberals have done everything in their power to bring down the Big Three. By their own admission they hate cars. They hate fossil fuels. They want everyone riding around on bicycles or mass-transit (unless of course you're a liberal and can afford a limo).

Since the early 70's they subjected the car industry to ever changing, all intrusive, hyper-regulations designed to weaken the jewel in the crown of America's industrial might. As a result of their short-sighted, self-important, champaign cocktail brand of liberalism, they have killed jobs killed cities and ruined lives. And to add insult to injury, after all their wicked plans came to fruition, they took our money and propped up an industrial zombie while screwing legitimate investors. Then they actually gave part of it to hard-left radicals in the UAW so they can build the kind of cars LIBERALS think we should have. And now they have the gall to actually claim they "saved" GM, saved it from bankruptcy. No they didn't, they killed GM deader than dead. What you see now is General Motors on Obama life-support. And it's painfully clear that's what they wanted all along.

It's the Vermont vacation home of his former Lieutenant Governor.  But who cares?  Do we expect him to spend his time in a mobile home?  A pop-up camper?   We learned last night from Mrs. Obama that when they met, the President's prized possession was a coffee table he found in a dumpster, his car had holes in the floorboards, and he only owned one pair of dress shoes (one half size too small!)   Kind of doubt those were accidental anecdotes.

"The Dog Ate My Homework" Convention Begins!

It's been going on for several months now; "We didn't realize the extent of the problem", "the hole was deeper than we thought", "we've made tremendous progress but the Republicans left us in such bad shape there's a lot more to be done",  and by the way, did we mention that Republicans are liars lying about our magnificent record of accomplishment with lies?

And now we've come to "the excuses" convention. I'm sorry, granted maybe I did spend most of  '08 drunk, but I can almost swear I heard Barack Obama say he could fix things. I still have a vague recollection of Obama saying he could get the economy going, end global warming, cut the debt in half and bring about the brotherhood of man. Yeah I'm almost positive he said that.

But now we have crazy unemployment, out of control spending, 16 trillion in debt, productivity at 1970 levels, and everything is trending towards "we're in deep dodo" territory. If you were trying to destroy a modern economy you couldn't have done a better job. And what does the Prez say about all this? When asked by some lick reporter to grade himself he gives himself an "incomplete". Just forget about the past three and a half years, I got it going on now, I know exactly what to do. It's not my fault.

Sorry sport, you don't get a mulligan on this course. Bellyaching and bitchin' about how tough it is don't feed the bulldog. Reagan had it a helluva lot tougher than you and he got the job done. The fact is, you don't have a friggin' clue what you're doing. I don't doubt you honestly believed that leftist Keynesian claptrap of a stimulus would work, but that's on you pal. And don't give me that "every economist agrees" bull-jive. The only economists you consulted either writes for the NY Times or previously occupied the Karl Marx Chair at Haaaarvard University. This is on you, this one is yours, and the American people are in no mood for bullshit or lame-ass excuses!

Friends, I simply can't do it.  I'm sorry, but I will be unable to provide mirror imaging of my coverage of RNC 2012 at DNC 2012.  I can't bring myself to watch.  I know....I know.  I'm intolerant.  I'm weak.  I'm a racist.  But I cannot bring myself to watch this nightmare of lies, obfuscation and revisionist history.   I'll probably "watch" by lurking on Twitter and seeing what my conservative homies who are paid to watch are saying.

The Democrats have a long history of metaphorically killing their parents and then asking for sympathy because after all, they are orphans. They are masters of misdirection  and subterfuge. Although they prefer not to, if necessary they will engage in what Goebbels famously referred to as "The Big Lie".

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

There's a Big Lie currently making the rounds, and Obama's reelection depends on it. The lie is that Republican policies are to blame for the state of the economy. "We can't go back", it is said, "to the Bush era policies that got us in this mess to begin with". And what's alarming is the Republicans seem to be unnerved by this ridiculous slander and can't (or won't) offer a rebuttal. Romney must counter this load of bollocks with the truth or he could lose this election. This lie is the keystone of Obama's reelection effort. Attacking it will force Obama to talk directly about the economy, it will make him defend his policies and keep him from changing the subject with this distraction or that. And it's easy enough to do.

Now, what is the truth? How and why did the economy crash? If there is one thing that can be pointed to it is the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 (Clinton revamped the law in 1997 to close the "mortgage gap" between black and whites). In a nutshell the CRA was a tool used by Democratic politicians and advocacy groups like ACORN to shake down banks. They were required, not encouraged mind you, required to make sub-prime loans based on race, geographic areas etc., doing away with normal underwriting criteria. Often times the advocacy groups themselves were the decision makers on the loans (horrifying but true). Furthermore these very same advocacy groups shook down banks for millions in "grants" with the help of the Federal regulatory gun to their heads of course. A real estate bubble was created, the banks and Wall Street started dumping the loans into questionable investment devices and trading them around, many eventually found their way to Fannie and Freddie. Investment houses and banks went belly up (some bailed out some not) and Fannie and Freddie are still costing us billions. You know the rest.

The point is we are living the policies that "got us into trouble to start with". Very little has changed. It wasn't a "Wall Street" problem. It wasn't "greedy banks". It was a problem of stupid, corrupt, shortsighted politicians (see Chris Dodd and Barney Frank) cow-towing to the far left to shakedown financial institutions. Romney MUST make this argument! And the first place I would look that could really bring this point home is the past leaders of ACORN like Bertha Lewis and the Rathke brothers Wade and Dale. They ripped off millions and are now living high on the hog with money that can be traced back to you and I, the American taxpayer (some commies they are!). Put a face to the scandal, explain how and why the Democrats are lying and for God's sake stop letting the Democrats get away with crying orphan.
