The Decline of the Old Dominion

Virginia should just propose to merge with Maryland. After all, they're pretty much the same place now. Both have Dem Governors, both have two Dem Senators, both went for BHO in the election. I made this point to a friend (Dem, UVA, Richmond resident) on the phone the other night, and he immediately pointed to Virginia's lower taxes.....not for long, friend.

  1. Have to disagree with you on this. The problem has been the candidates that run in Virginia. Gilmore was disliked by his own party probably more than democrats disliked him. Warner is a pragmatic, middle of the road democrat. Webb not so much. If the Va Republican party can find a solid candidate that can appeal to the middle ground voters than Webb is defeatable in the next election.

  2. agree with anon. i moved from maryland almost 30 years ago vowing never to return, never to pay another penny's state taxes to that bastion of wealth reapportionment. it has only gotten worse since (my mother and sisters still allow their wages to be raided by the governor in return for some of the worst public service I have seen by a group of entitled state workers). Despite the Richmond GOP's ineptitude at fielding serious candidates for much of anything, there is ample stock of such people from which to draw. Hopefully, finding themselves totally skunked in every major election, even the GoP officals who equate time in Richmond as the preeminent qualification for national office may realize the need to re-order the priority. Virginia is a beautiful, diverse state (in its geography, culture and population). Despite being the capitol, Richmond is so unlike most of the commonwealth that few who live more than 50 miles from there identify with it in any meaningful way. by the way, taxes aren't great in virginia, but i have yet, in seeking assistance from a state official of any level, to leave with anything but a satisfaction that my tax dollars are indeed at work. virginia state workers must adopt a similar view of our tax dollars before I would recommned fusing the two and before I have to start looking for a new state in which to reside. if ever we get serious about dc statehood, perhaps they could join maryland...there is virtually no distinguishing feature between the two.

  3. Mudge...how's the view from the land time forgot? YOU don't live in Virginia, you live in some Walter Raleigh like vestige of 1585. The state has changed, and changed markedly. Not for the better mind you.

There are lots of solid conservatives in Maryland too. There are mountains and oceans and deer and trout. But at the end of the day, the great mass of people in MD long ago decided to hook up to the drip of government. Virginia is headed that way.

A blizzard you say? In early November? My God, He was right. He has now obviously started to heal the earth.

I must cross-post this news to the Friday Funnies side of the board.

  6. And just think what Virginia will look like when Terry McAuliffe becomes its next Governor.

  7. I grew up in Northern VA so I am qualified to say that... Maryland girls wear too much make-up.
