The Death of New Years Day Football

Michael Wilbon gets it right in this strong criticism of the BCS and College Football. I remember the days where New Years consisted of agonizing through the Mummers Parade until the early game started, then having four or five games the rest of the day. It was sublime. Now, there is virtually nothing, each bowl in the BCS gets its own time slot to feature a meaningless game, as NOTHING matters as much as the game to be played.....ON JAN 8!

What a wonderful Jan 1 it would be if there were FOUR playoff games, leading to a semi-final the next week and a final after that! Jan 1 would be an amazing orgy of college football....one I would like to return to.

  2. Couldn't agree with you more. It's also a pleasure to watch the Mummers die a slow death. They cut into too many important football games before cable.

  3. I just want to know -- did Alabama suddenly join the Big 10?

  4. CW, I don't often agree with your arguments, but your spot on regarding the fall from grace of New Years games.

Regarding the National champ - My vote, if i had a vote, would be for Utah -- screw the BCS, the Utes earned it. Don't need to watch the game on the 8th -- the only undefeated team stayed that way, to the great dismay of many in the BCS world and of course the SE and Big12 conferences.

  5. Several comments here...

    A. I agree, I long for those days of the Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Rose all on the same day and trying to figure out which one to watch.

    B. I like Anonymous' comments about the Utes giving the current system of selecting a National Champion... they are the only unbeaten left, the Utes should be National champs, much like GT did in 1991 when they went undefeated including a victory in Charlottesville over the Hoos, who were ranked #1 at the time... though we were probably not legitimate #1's and GT was probably not the best team in college football that year... but the system of selecting a champion, schedule, luck and good play made them the National Champs.

    C. With all this said, it leads me to point #3, if all the other divisions have figured it out, and we want a national champion in Division I, then there needs to be a playoff system... if we want to continue with the current bowl system, then let's stop calling them National Champions...

  6. I think Utah has a legitimate beef...hence, my support for the playoff.
