Big Fat Friday Free For All

All Time High (April 1 2009): 192.2
Diet start (June 1): 189
Last Friday: 169.4
Today: 169.2
Goal: Sub 150

Slow week on the diet front, a little disconcerting as I did quite a bit of running and seemed to eat wisely. I've revised the diet goal down an additional 10 pounds, largely as a concession to The Kitten who has decided to start a diet and exercise program of her own--and wants me along for the ride.

What's on your mind, people? Are you beginning to feel the long march to serfdom that Mudge alludes to so eloquently in his posting from last night? Are you wondering about the future of our country? Talk amongst yourselves...

  1. I think the Democrats are on autopilot until November's election. If NJ and Va go Republican it might be a wake up call... I say might.
But they may just as likely take the attitude that we are in power now, we've wanted these things for years and now is our chance. Let's get them into law and build in as many impediments to reversal as possible. "Bake them into the cake" as one talking head put it.

For them this might not be bad politics because then the ground shifts. You're not fighting over how you're fighting over how much, and the Dems are experts at that one.

My advice? Get used to it. We let it happen, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We allowed our children to be educated by leftists and then we're shocked when they come out in droves for Obama. We paid people not to burn our cities down and now cities like Detroit and New Orleans need burning. We allowed our country to be flooded not with the Enrico Fermi's of the world but the Mr. Weed-eater's of the world. Our complacency and apathy have brought us here. Get used to it.

  3. Have any of you ever participated in National Review's 'Call Home' activities? The other night we did one, and were treated to a fascinating hour of discussion by (mostly) Victor Davis Hanson. In our own home! I assume most of you are NRO readers; when you see the next one advertised, take advantage of it-you won't be disappointed.

  4. My issues:
Congress gets a raise and people dependent on social security do not.

Health care debate divided on party lines.

    Trillions spent with zero accounting

    Transparency made opaque

WE NEED TERM LIMITS AND A THIRD PARTY

  5. NJ is starting to get close. Christie had a huge lead but it is narrow right now and the unions love Corzine again. Only in NJ.

I like this. It can be compared to the way that forest fires have been (mis)managed over the years.

  7. What CW lacks in stature is more than made up for in intellect.

  8. Jersey's funny. Corzine has nothing to run on at all, zip, period, nada, zilch. But his operatives have decided to make Christie's weight an issue. Pretty sad state of affairs (so to speak).

  9. In memory of a former collegue and friend who would be greatly saddened to see how our country is falling.

FORD, RICHARD GEORGE (Dick), 96 opened the door to “Life’s Last Great Adventure” June 20, 2009, Eden Prairie, MN. Honesty and Integrity Above All was his mantra. His love and dedication to God, family, friends, and country will remain forever unequaled. Our inconsolable sadness in his passing is that the world needs more of his kind, not less.

1937, he started his career working for Eliot Ness, Vice Squad, Cleveland Police Department. Busting bookies and bootleg joints he “brought in” renowned mobster and murderer Shander Birns and once arrested Al Capone.

In 1940, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor, his National Guard horseman unit was federalized. Setting sail for the South Pacific, he unknowingly embarked on an illustrious career as an Intelligence Officer in the United States Army.

His military career and unfailing service to country spanned three decades, three wars, and innumerable foreign destinations. Memorable assignments include The Pentagon, (Intelligence Section, Korean Desk), Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (Russian Combat Intelligence), United Nations (Intelligence, Korea). Reporting directly to the Army Chief of Staff, briefing Generals, Ambassadors, and Presidential Cabinet Members, he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Retiring from the Army in 1965. He joined Air America (CIA Cold War subsidiary) South East Asia for 10 years, with final employment, Bell Helicopter, Iran.

An active duty Advanced Paramedic from age 70-81, he volunteered for Fayette County Emergency Services Fayetteville, Ga., rescuing and resuscitating. His greatest joy, the emergency delivery of two baby boys!
