Charles Murray on Glen Beck

Murray nails my objections to Glen Beck (throw Limbaugh in there for good measure) in a superb blog entry.

  1. Yeah they miss a quote or two. And yes they can be loud and overbearing. But they are defenders of freedom and liberty and as long as they are I'm going to be there with them. When compared to the lies and treachery of the domestic and international left over the years, their transgressions are as minor as a flea bite. Hell I can pick out more obvious BS in one hour on MSNBC than Dr. Murray can find on Glenn Beck in a year.
We're in the fight of our life. Two years from now this could be a very different country from the one our parents gave us. Spending time criticizing our own over some petty nonsense is just dumb.

  2. Very distant stepbrothers raised in vastly different intellectual environments by different parents, maybe, but Beck and Olberman brothers? No way.

    Generally speaking,
Beck may interpret some people's uttering’s in a broad manner, but Olberman will outright twist the truth into a lie until it screams for mercy.

Shame on anybody who is not intelligent enough to separate the wheat of truth from the chaff of deceit no matter from whence it comes.

  4. It's a fair criticism, but it sounds like this guy's beef is more with Beck's researchers than with Beck himself. "He is spectacularly right on about 95 percent of the substantive issues he talks about...many times I've sat on my sofa wishing I could make the same point as effectively." I think he has a man-crush.

  5. Fair points boys, but I remain unpersuaded. Populist wavers of the bloody shirt are abhorrent on either side of the aisle.

  6. CW they're not playing to you. At five in the afternoon Beck is going for the John Stewart audience. He's outrageous, provocative, sarcastic, funny and that's what will attract college kids. Young folks don't want equivocation, they want it between the eyes. They want somebody who takes it to 'em.
Look, if six year olds could vote somebody would have The Cat in the Hat out there talking healthcare reform. So Beck is propagandizing to twenty-somethings the virtues of freedom and capitalism. GREAT!

  7. Speaking of "bloody shirt" a ship in the Spanish Armada was sailing along when the call went out... British ship spotted. The captain yelled "bring me my red shirt". The crew fought well and took the enemy vessel. The first mate inquired as to purpose of the red shirt. The captain's response was in the event I am wounded the crew will not notice and continue to fight.
A few days late the call went out...20 British ships. The captain yelled "bring me my brown pants".
