Big Fat Friday Free For All

All Time High (April 1 2009): 192.2
Diet start (June 1): 189
Last Friday: 176.4
Today: 175
Goal: Sub 150

Back on track--I'm thinking 1.5 lbs a week is sustainable and healthy.

For those of you interested in a great online way of tracking your diet, nutrition and exercise, I recommend a tool resident on Lance Armstrong's "Livestrong" site. Once there, select "Daily Plate" and then "My Plate". You'll have the opportunity to enter in your height, gender, weight and activity level--and a desired weight loss rate. This will produce a target "net calorie" figure for you. Either meal by meal or once a day, you go in and enter descriptions of what you've eaten, which bring up menu driven choices to select--and voila, all the diet and nutritional information is entered for you. Additionally, any workouts/exercise you do that day are entered, creating a running figure of "net calories" for that day. As Smoothfur once reminded us, it doesn't really matter whether you're on a low fat or a low carb diet (though most argue a 'Healthy" diet is the key) --it simply matters that you reduce net caloric intake to a level that is less than weight sustainment. Give the tool a try--it's pretty helpful. (Hat Tip on Livestrong.com to Robert Thorn).

What's on your mind this week? Are you feeling a little let-down that the President didn't tack more to the center in his SOTU speech? Do you think Samuel Alito will have something to do during the next SOTU, like maybe, wash his hair? Go ahead, get it off your chest......

  1. Criticizing a Supreme Court decision at the State of the Union was unprecedented and inappropriate. The Justices are there out of respect on their own time, and to be subjected to ridicule before Congress and the nation is unconscionable. It was a breach of protocol and it was classless and furthermore the criticism itself was in error.

Obama owes the Supreme Court and the American people a public apology.

Tough lose for the Cavs last night. CW, I know just how you feel, only our guys couldn't push most community colleges to overtime.

  3. Speaking of classless, did you note Atty Gen Holder partaking in the standing ovation just feet away from the Supremes in response to Obama's lies about what they had ruled? Too bad we didn't also have cameras on Chavez, Bin Laden and Ahmadinejad to see how many times they rose in applause to the SOTU. I suspect they would have been in near perfect unison with Mme Speaker and company.

And just think about the opportunity being able to put a camera on Bin Laden would offer this Administration: we would then be able to have actual footage of us reading him his rights so we could absolutely avoid any Miranda violation defense. And you thought this administration is weak on terror. Shame on you.

In his State of the Union Address, Barry Hussein said, "We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal…"

Would somebody tell the former law professor that the idea we are all created equal comes from the Declaration of Independence, NOT the Constitution.

Thanks to Weaselzippers, scouring the bowels of the internet so I don't have to.

But on a lighter note, I have a question for the soldiers and Marines who read your site.

Do you guys engage in office hi-jinks by bumping into one another and saying, "I'm sorry, I didn't see you"?

  7. ALL STOP!!!

    Forget BFFFFA.

    This just in:

"Results of a new study show that being overweight once you reach 70 years of age can actually lengthen your life span.

This is a very interesting study finding to say the least, as excess weight has never before been linked to anything positive in life.

Researchers analyzed health info for more than 9,200 elderly people, tracking their overall death rate for a 10 year period.

Those with a body mass index that put them in the class of being overweight, lived longer lives and also had fewer health problems."

Please pass the Deep Fried Twinkies and cue "Who Wants to Live Forever".

  8. TdP - This raises the issue of why in the world the Navy selected a blue and gray camo uniform. Perhaps it was to put the icing on the cake of two years of the worst Navy uniform board decisions in my entire career (what is with that khaki shirt/black trouser get up? Combined with the shoulder device cum collar device, it looks like some of the costume sets for really bad military movies who don't have a military advisor). As anyone who knows anything at all about camo, there are two questions you should ask when selecting a pattern: 1. What/who are you hiding from? 2. What are you trying to blend into? Clearly these two questions were omitted from consideration because unless we are trying to ensure a man overboard is able to blend into the ocean and hide from the lookouts and watch officers attempting to rescue him, we really missed the boat, pun not initially intended. I actually have to believe that the main motivation for this horrible selection was that MCPON envied the Soldiers and Marines who got to wear their actually functional camo in the Pentagon and all he had to show for it was that bad costume set he had recently proposed. Ugh!

  9. Mudge, we like to call those new uniforms "Blueberries."

Given the objective to blend in with your surroundings, and based on my observations at NAVCENT, the uniform should have had a Baskin Robbins, Burger King, or NEX snack aisle background.

  12. Don't you guys wear dixiecups and bellbottom dungarees and Pea coats anymore?

Since you guys are talking about the Navy I've always wanted to know what's the Navy's policy on banging the arse off some Navy chick onboard ship? Last I looked the percentage of long voyages and impregnated sea-puddin' was off the charts. CW you were a Captain of a Destroyer or a Frigate or a Man-o-War or something. How did you handle it? Does the commander get in trouble if half his crew are knocked up when they return to port? Do they discharge the morally deficient NavyHo? How 'bout the seamen(not the stain, the sailor)? What's his punishment? Let me guess, Captain's Mast (article 15), sweep it under the rug. After all you ain't gonna throw some E-6 with 14 years time in grade out 'cause he rodded out some floozy ain't been in a year.

When I was in we had some WACs that were passed around more than a spliff at a Bob Marley concert. But they were generally ignored I assume because the NCO's were partaking as well.

Sorry to get off on this tangent and I'm not asking for prurient titillation, although I am into prurient titillation. But considering the "don't ask don't tell" thing is now front and center these are important and serious questions. Morale of the troops is essential and these issues have a direct effect.

  13. Anyone else notice that the news anchors seem to be referring to Osama Bin Laden now as a "terror suspect"?

It's one thing to fawn over the POTUS and even his failed policies, but to adopt the notion that OBL is "innocent until proven guilty" is automatically buying into the insanity that he warrants a trial before being summarily executed. Don't worry, I'm not advocating summary executions. I would first ensure Dick Cheney and a couple CIA interrogators introduce themselves to OBL and permit them a few weeks to really get to know one another. I suspect by then, OBL would be wishing we'd sent Jack Bauer instead.

  15. Blueberries are ridiculous and further proof that the Navy has lost its eye towards history.

Why one would want to be camouflaged with the water once you have fallen in is lost on me.

The Navy uniform board members should all receive adverse fitness reports.
