Nixon was an enigma. He had an incredible intellect combined with a country lawyer's common sense. But he also had such an inferiority complex when it came to the elites (whom he obviously wanted to please and was forever trying to win over) that his judgment was sometimes compromised. His greatest mistake was underestimating the lengths his enemies would go to destroy him.
