My Am I Fat

Some analysis of how fat I am:

1.  The Navy was good for keeping me in a manageable range.  Retirement has meant wide swings.  It will get tougher and tougher to make the swings as I get older, I'm sure.

2.  Periods of unemployment are great; the first year of new jobs is terrible.

3.  I weigh less today than I did when I started keeping track over six years ago, though I am above my average weight--my average weight is "overweight" by BMI standards (28.6).  For me to no longer be overweight by BMI, I need to weigh 159--or 26.6 lbs less than I do today.  For those who remember, I weighed 158 on the day I got married (April 1989).

4.  159 lbs is probably out of reach.  I'd like to settle in between 170 and 175.

You know how I know you're gay? You kept track of your weight for 6 years. I'm demanding you turn in your man card.

  2. As an Edward Tufte disciple, I would set the vertical scale to 25 Lbs either side of your historical min and max, and flatten that line out a little bit. Or if you really want to see some West Virginia peaks and valleys, set min/max to actual.

If you weren't so far away, I'd slap the manhood back into you.

I think we need to set a challenge for you - 159! You can do it!

I was inspired to a more audacious goal by Peter Shankman, a social media/PR guy/entrepreneur (founder of HARO, Help A Reporter Out). He found himself still fat even after prepping for and completing an Ironman. He picked an outrageous goal - 10% bodyfat - and is documenting his progress at www.ayeartotenpercent.com

I came back from the holidays with some rather unflattering pictures, and seeing Shankman's goal, set a goal for me: I-day by I-day - get to my 1984 Naval Academy I-day weight of 166 by July 7.

I realized that I'm actually good at hitting a standard - I've always made my 196 weight the Navy allows at 71 inches. I just found myself working DOWN to it rather than creeping up on it. I just needed to pick a better standard.

What's working for me: low carb, weights, high-intensity interval cardio stuff. Down 38 from January 4.

Don't know if I'll hit my BHAG (big hairy audacious goal) of 166 - I'm an inch taller and have thrown on some muscle - but it's better to set a tough goal than an easy one.

    159! You can do it!

  10. He's not gay, he's classic anal retentive. Year of Navy bureaucratic nit-picking has driven him mad.

I thank God I never had a CO like CW. The Army tends to breeds pricks, not fops.

  11. Hammer, you would have been hard pressed in 1990 to find a more hardcore leader than CW. In Army-speak he was "all ate up", and "Hooah all the way, hooah?" I suffered at his hands (and feet) for two long years, and cried real Man tears when he left our first ship, it was never the same. We did not paint our faces like you shameless fags in the Army, but kept the Soviets at bay, and afraid of us for our time.

  12. You know, I'd rather have a hardass than an idiot. I had both and as long as you did your job the hardasses were a thousand times easier to work for. Everything was on the table with no ambiguity. You screw up, here's what will happen. You do good, here's what you get. It's the wishy washy morons I had trouble with.
Plus, I was smarter than most of the NCO's and all of the officers, so there was that as well.
