Up early to enjoy the sunrise with the dog. It's a great scene here, geese in the cove, (gas)fires in the (gas)fireplaces, coffee, etc. About an hour from now, I'll make the four-plus hour trek to Charlottesville for the UVA-NC State game, where the underachieving Wolfpack comes to town to take on the Wahoos, fresh off a big victory over then #12 ranked Georgia Tech.
I am, of course, wary of any game opponent that follows a big win. NC State is 3-3, with ACC losses to a surprisingly tough Wake team and a very close loss to Georgia Tech. This SHOULD be a very close game, which does not bode well for me returning home tonight at a decent hour, as the better the game, the longer it takes to get out of Charlottesville.
Oh....the other thing. Hammer and I have a steak dinner on the game's outcome.
I desire to dine with you and Hammer.
ReplyDeleteOrdinarily I'd rag your Yankee ass down to the ground, but I just can't work up the enthusiasm. UVA is probably the better team but not on the day.
ReplyDeleteNow, as to our wager. If you recall the bet was for a steak dinner with all the trimmings, alcohol separate (wouldn't expect a teetotaler to subsidized my power drinking), with the winner providing the cigars (which is truly a Godsend considering you'd probably show up with Swisher Sweets or Dutch Masters... or worse).
Now, let's settle on the location. We can make it a very casual affair and hit my local, the Cleveland Draft House where you can get a marginal steak and I'll have some wings or a Reuben (great barfood, steaks...not so much). This would be the economy choice and I'm totally fine with it. Or we can put on the dog at Vinnie's or Sullivan's. I'm good to go with whatever choice you make; it's your nickel.
There was no better team on that field yesterday. I saw the worst quarter of football of my life there (the third) in which both teams distinguished themselves through their ineptitude.
ReplyDeleteAs for the dinner...I shall not economize on an obligation of this importance. We will dine at Sullivans, and alcohol (within reason--no $300 wines) is part of that obligation.
It will be a fitting repast for men of character. I expect to be in your environs the weekend of 9-11 December, so lets shoot for the evening of the 9th (Friday) for now, as we'll likely be celebrating my sainted father's 80th birthday on the 10th.
Sounds like a plan brotherman.
ReplyDeleteWow, dear old dad is 80? Good deal. I'll take 80 all day long.
By the way Big Fred, you are certainly welcome.
UVA, win or lose, you lose. You have to go to dinner with Hammer.
