Another Republican Politician Goes Down

Mark Sanford is the latest casualty of rampant selfishness in political America, admitting today that he was in Argentina with his mistress and not on the Appalachian Trail.

This is deeply disappointing to me personally, as I have come to know Governor Sanford over the past year and a half and grown to like him personally and respect him politically. Though I am disappointed in him and his conduct, neither of those conditions has changed.

I am also disappointed as a Republican, in that as a party, we cannot seem to get out of our own way.

I honestly don't see how he can stay in office, or even that he should. If he's serious about saving his marriage and family, that's where he ought to spend his time.

He probably ought to resign. His constituents should push him to resign. I'm not saying that they should not eventually forgive him, but forgiveness must be earned. He should recede from public life with the shame and ignominy this sort of transgression deserves.
If one can't be trusted to remained to committed to the sacred oath of marriage (before God), than how can one be trusted to discharge less important obligations?

If he isn't intelligent enough to A. Not do it in the first place or B. Be able to hide it, then he is probably really not intelligent enough to be Governor.

My heart goes out to his family. What a shmuck.

And now the State releases supposed emails between Sanford and mistress. Really? REALLY?
He's in the wrong, but I think that is poor form. Shame on them.

He is sort of a romantic devil, no?

Perhaps we should let gays get married. Turns out that it really ain't that sacred.

Perhaps he got all caught up in the fervor of a recent quote:
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better 'conclusion'.." I mean, after all, isn't that the Holy Grail?

Maybe this is the new nominating process. There won't be a primary to select the 2012 GOP candidate. The last one to not have cheated on his/her spouse gets the nom.
