Sorta glad there wasn't more damage this week--busy week with bad eating and little exercise.

So friends, what's on your minds? Use this little chunk of high priced interweb real-estate to speak up on whatever it is that's got your attention.

  1. As you folks may know I'm married to a beautiful Irish woman... well an Irish woman. And she's set in her foreign ways. She likes football (soccer). She's a big Arsenal fan (The Gunners) and as night follows day hates Manchester United with a fervor usually reserved for religious wars or metermaids. So having spend a bit of time in Europe (Army, junior year abroad bullshit, Intel Ireland) I love football as well.

This is the happy time, the World Cup. This is war without the blood (usually). I'm a bit apprehensive about the venue, afterall South Africa is one of the most lawless shitholes in the world. It is run by organized tribal gangs, AIDS is rampant, guns prolific and rape and murder the order of the day.

I just hope we see some good football.

  2. From the Minority Report department:

Russia parliament votes to strengthen KGB successor

Today at 16:55 | Reuters MOSCOW, June 11 (Reuters) - Russia's parliament on Friday voted to boost the powers of the successor to the Soviet KGB, allowing it to summon people it believes are about to commit a crime and threaten jail for those who disobey its orders.

Rights groups said the proposed regulations could be used by the FSB security service to detain opposition activists and independent journalists and undermine President Dmitry Medvedev's promises to foster civil rights.

"It's a step toward a police state," said Vladimir Ulas, a member of the opposition Communist Party. "It is effectively a ban on any real opposition activity."

Oh, like how the Communist Party ran the Soviet Union for 70 some odd years?

  3. At first, I thought this piece was from April Fools Day and I just plain old missed it:

Obama Orders Dance Classes, Movie Nights, and Bingo for Illegal Detainees

  4. Doc - Absolutely nothing this administration does (that is normally confused with an April Fools joke) surprises me anymore. How citizens of the most freedom-loving country in the world choose this man from all the other citizens (foregoing any debate about whether he is one) to be our president may well be the greatest mystery in the history of mankind.
