A delicious story here of machinations within the Democratic Party to relieve Senator "If you want it built, you'd better build it in West Virginny" Robert K.K.K Byrd from his post as Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee (a.k.a The College of Cardinals). Bob's slowing down these days (he's 90) and word is some don't quite think he's up to the job. Next in line behind him for the Chairmanship is the spry Senator Inouye, who at 84 is a spring chicken compared to Senator Byrd.
The best is yet to come, folks. Just wait until you see what the Dems do to Senator Lieberman in the next Congress....
Robert Byrd is a pimp and a caricature. He represents much of what is wrong with the Congress, and virtually all of what is wrong with the Senate.
At risk of sound age discriminatory, but do we really need leaders who are 84 and 90 making the types of decisions we require of our elected officials at the national level. Personnaly, I believe there should be an age limit and a term limit for Senators and Congressmen.... we have it for the President, why not these elected officials as well... sure I understand the history of term limits for the President and not for the members of Congress, but that doesn't mean that these rules/laws cannot and should not be changed.
ReplyDeleteI believe that part of the reason we have such partisanship in Washington is that the elected officials have no term limits, so they get elected, and then build these alliances, become entrenched and then it's hard to oust them from office.
Just one perspective....
Can't go with you on this one; though I agree both Byrd and Inouye are beyond the useful point for these kinds of jobs, I don't like the idea of term limits. That's what elections are for.
