A US Destroyer apparently pumped a
few .50 cal rounds into a Polish port warehouse...not good. Since the attack on USS COLE, Navy ships out of
homeport are very well armed topside with "crew-served" weapons. As more topside weapons were fielded, there were more and more "accidental discharges". By the time I left command in 2006, the Admirals were so sick of it they no longer used the term "accidental discharge", choosing instead to use the term "negligent discharge"--and you can only guess the atmosphere in which such a decision was made. Don't think the
Skipper will get fired, but the fallout won't be pretty.
This sounds like a violation of Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Let me guess, loss of one pay grade and a $500.00 fine spread over three months.
ReplyDeleteJustice is served.
If accountability in the corporate and government worlds was as good as the military world, I think we'd all be much better off.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the Captain's Mast will be just the tip of the iceberg. Then there will be a JAGMAN investigation, there will be a "safety stand-down" in 6th Fleet, a whole slew of over-reactions will ensue...
ReplyDeletea few years ago the army replaced the term of accidental discharge with negligent discharge -- I believe it was the correct decision. NDs are generally the result of poor discipline, training or a combination of both...
ReplyDeleteHate to be the jagoff voluntold to do the JAGMAN. bye Battle WHEE.
ReplyDelete3 rounds from a M240 (7.62) vice .50
ReplyDeleteGosh, I thought this was a test-fire of the Navy's Spiral-One version of the new Land-based Missile Defense System being touted by the Administration.
ReplyDeleteSorry CW, Mudge, et al, I just could not resist. :)
