The Conservative Wahoo
The Blog: A compendium of thoughts on politics, world affairs, economics, pop culture and social issues, from the center right perspective of me--Bryan McGrath--a University of Virginia graduate who spent a career in the world's greatest Navy keeping my mouth shut about politics and social issues (ok, publicly keeping it shut). Those days are over! Pull up a chair and chime in where you will. Keep it clean, civil, concise and relevant.
The Fish: The fish is a "coat of arms" for the blog, symbolizing three formative influences in the life of the blog founder. The first is his experience at the University of Virginia--symbolized most importantly by the fish itself, or a caricature of a "Wahoo", the fish we have acquired as an informal nickname. Additionally there is the sword, the sword of a Cavalier. It is not wielded in a threatening manner, as this is a civil blog. But it is there, should it be needed. Thirdly, there is the influence of 21 years in the Navy--symbolized by the anchor on the Wahoo's fin (and again, the sword) . Finally, there is the bowler, tuxedo, and monocle, symbols of a refined, intellectual conservatism, or what I seek to encourage here.
The Policy: I take FULL responsibility for what I write. I will not be held responsible for the content of my comments section--as long as it is civil and passes my own inscrutable sniff tests, it will appear. If the comment offends you, that is on you.

There are many valid reasons to criticize the Dems and President Obama. Conservatives need to vocally distance themselves from these people who "cry Hitler."
I agree with Thairish-- with respect to references to Hitler, he who resorts to the first reference, loses.

Hold on a second. Where were you when the libs were screaming Hitler whenever Bush's name was brought up? Google Bush Hitler and 1,340,000 hits come up. Do it on YouTube and you get some fairly professional (and actually pretty cool) videos of Bush morphing into Hitler, Keith Olbermann accusing Bush of "Hitler like" laws (not so cool)and on and on.
At this stage it's just very boring. Plus, most of the people who throw Hitler's name around have no idea what the guy was about.
Um....it was wrong then too.
Also, I don't think he was blogging for most of the Bush presidency.
Is this the "waaah, they're doing it too!!" defense?
Why is it so taboo to relate Obama to Hitler? If he is doing things that are "similar" or "resemble" things that the Nazi's or Hitler did, then it is totally appropriate. If he starts to act like Regan, then we can start calling him The Gipper. Till then...
If it walks like a duck, if it talks like a duck, then you better not call it a duck or we will call you a crazy-racist-bigot!

Look, saying someone is like Hitler is so loaded it's only meant as an insult or to piss someone off or anything apart from advancing the debate. Hell when I was in school I was a very vocal (who me?) libertarian and at an election night party (1980) at a professor's house, in front of God and everyone there, some lady called me a NAZI. That liberal _itch! A Thomas Jefferson/Milton Friedman/John Locke/Adam Smith libertarian to the core... a NAZI? I haven't worn those jackboots since.
LTJG--it isn't taboo, it simply is intellectually lazy. There are a lot better arguments to be made than the "oh yeah, well you're like Hitler" brand. Those are what we should use, those are what the other side should use.
Just once I'd like to hear someone instead of dropping the H-bomb say, "That's just like Chairman Mao... you know... because it's communist"
All I ask for is a little creativity.
For that matter when will accusing people of racism fall out fashion?
OooooooK, so have we ever had another United States President who had his very own logo? Isn't that a bit creepy? I mean it's not like even Mao, Lenin, or Stalin had the hammer and sickle as their own personal label. I'm sure that even if Kim in NorKor has his own logo, the leftys would have put it on a T-shirt by now.
There is absolutely no need to resort to name calling when discussing the president. The arguments against President Obama should be based entirely on his lack of qualification for the office, his performance to date and the lack of merit to his ideas for the future. When you have completed that, you should be too tired to resort to name calling.
Name calling is best discontinued after the third grade
Anonymous, presidential and pres. candidate logos have been around for a while. Google "presidential logos." Or see this and that and the other.
Your comments are sort of like saying, hey Obama signs his name, what President has ever done that? Creepy 'leftys.' Repeatedly.
GHP - I think the difference here is that the examples you cite are campaign logos, and were disgarded once the candidate actually assumed the office. Obama is a bit different, in that the iconic "O" has been used in various official capacities (sometimes in lieu of the actual presidential seal). For example, the initial design of the "Obamacare" logo incorporated the big "O" along with an eagle with spread wings, prompting some (yes, including Limbaugh) to point out the similarities between it and the iconic designs of a certain former German dictator.
Once upon a time I wore the Eagle, Globe and Anchor proudly. Never realized I was indicating sympathy with the Nazis by flaunting something outspread wings over a globe shape.
That's great that Rush and co. are expending efforts fighting the good fight there, and good luck on purging the caduceus, eagle, and round shapes from our national and medical iconography.
I can't wait to do another blog entry so that this one will move down the page, hopefully there to lose interest....
I'm not against name calling. Sometimes that is a very effective tactic that cuts to the bone. I'm just against using some tired old cliche. Listen, when your wife calls you a TV NAZI just because you don't want to watch American Idol, well it's entered the language as some sort of generic putdown for perceived bullies. By the way she always wins.
I'll go the other way with a comparison. Messiah 1.0 was symbolized by his followers with a fish or the cross. Our latest version has a more colorful logo.
I would not be surprised if the Democrats attempt to have Obama's logo appear on the 2012 ballot in place of his name; in order to capture the illiterate vote.
I'm sorry to comment twice in one hour on a subject that seems to be of interest to your readers CW, but maybe instead of Adolf H or Jesus of Nazareth, maybe the comparison we need to look at is the height challenged rocker Prince. Didn't he change his name to a symbol? Is "The President Formerly Known as Obama" in our future?
