A Hunting Weekend Approaches

I'll be leaving the farm sometime tomorrow mid-day or so, headed South the the Virginia part of the Eastern Shore.  There, I will hook up with my old friend Mudge and two other good friends for a weekend of hunting--birds maybe tomorrow afternoon for a bit, deer on Saturday morning.

The weather's going to be wonderful--not as cold as the last time I sat in a tree stand.

It will be good to be with Mudge.  He's good people.

We never did get an answer on how that fancy Italian shotgun is working out for you. Is it worth the money or just a status symbol? You know, like Jaguar.

Don't shoot things wearing blaze orange....that's just a tip.

Hope it's a good hunting trip.

Hammer--I'll grant you, the Jag's purchase was equal parts love and vanity.

But the shotgun? Firstly, there is no one whose regard I would seek who would consider the kind of shotgun I have to be an important thing--cept maybe Mudge, and he was with me when I picked it out. Secondly, it looked cool and felt really good coming up to the shoulder. Thirdly, it was sold by a hunting shop in town, and I like to buy stuff from the local guys.

Yes CW, but this is a top of the line, premium firearm. What I want to know is, was it worth the extra money as opposed to say a Remington or a Mossberg? I'm not talking about the Tyrolean walnut stock or the hand engraving, I'm interested strictly in functionality. Is it a better performing shotgun and if so, is it worth the extra scratch?

When you say "extra" money Hammer, you have no idea what it was I was prepared to pay, right? Because I have little or no idea of the "value" of shotguns (largely because I don't "value" them--like I do Jaguars), I figured I'd pay between $1K and $1500. While talking with Mudge in the store--and looking at a bunch of guns between $400 and $3000, I shouldered this one and it simply felt better than any other gun of any price. Huge impact. That's why I bought it, and it just so happened to have been in the range I thought I would be happy to pay.

Had I shouldered a $300 gun that I liked, it would have gone home with me.

Fair enough.
