Obama's 60 Minutes Interview

I'm watching Senator Obama's interview with Steve Croft on 60 minutes right now, and I am trying to look objectively at Barack Obama as a man who could potentially be my President (and yours!).

I thought about the Democrats who have run for President since I became a thinking political being: Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, Mike Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry--and I wondered where he fit in terms of my confidence in his ability to lead the country.

The plain truth of the matter is that he stands behind only Bill Clinton in terms of my innate sense of confidence in him. One of the reasons he is doing as well as he is in this race is that he comes across as serious, responsible, and tough.

And I disagree with virtually everything he stands for politically.

Yeah, integrity, thats what Obama stands for.

Good call... I agree with your assessment of his abilities. I am concerned about his policies as well... but I think he can't do much worse than the current POTUS. Yes we obviously disagree on this point. Joe

Good thing you are retired from the Navy because I pity any officer who would have to salute Obama.

Obama's friend, advisor, mentor; whatever you would call Bill Ayres, was behind the Weather Underground's domestic bombing campaign in the 1970s.

Barack Obama is a friend of terrorists, plain and simple.

wow the comment immediately above is a wild ass assertion of epic proportions. Can’t believe anyone would seriously suggest that Mr. Obama is a friend of the terrorists. Silly entry…

Bryan, I recommend you republish your 1998 piece on the responsibilities and obligations of the military. It could enlighten the audience. I will gladly salute the winner of the general election, regardless of party affiliation. Joe H

Can't do that. Despite your efforts to "out" me, I am trying to maintain some shred of anonymity here.

I'm sorry. I guess in demospeak, Bill Ayres is a "freedom fighter", not a terrorist.

Looking forward to more re-education once the dems have control.

Well Joe H, if you are a military man, I guess it will be your obligation to salute Obama should he become your commander in chief.

But remember, his kind despises you. They mock you in their salons and they ban recruiters from college campuses and our high schools. If you serve any purpose to them, if you have any value, it is only as a "useful idiot".

I heard the same logic applied to Clinton... after having served in his WH i don't think there was much merit to the claim.

I recall Mr Bush said "help is on the way..." well if the past 7.5 years has been helpful, I'd rather not have any help. Joe H

I'm in the wonderful position of disagreeing with just about everyone here. I think the suggestion that having to salute a President Obama would be tough on a military man is misplaced. Military folks just don't think that way. The country elects him, he's our President, game over.

I do think Joe has not responded to (nor has the media done ANY real work in talking about) Barack Obama's cozy relationship with a man who tried to bomb the Pentagon. I'm all for redemption, and I'm all for forgiveness...but bill ayers has not repudiated a single act he participated in as a member of the Weather Underground. Not one. I'm not sure what the "wild ass assertion" here is; the talk of the well-documented relationship with Bill Ayers? Or the pity on someone having to salute Obama? If it is the former, than it is not wild-assed.

As for the view of the Democratic Party of folks serving in the military, Joe's right. By and large, most Dems are just as grateful for his service and are just as proud of our military. What Joe doesn't speak to is the fringe of the Democratic Party, the loud, proud, group of very left-wing folks for whom a military is an extravagance, for whom fighting for a cause greater than self is unseemly, for whom America's greatness and singularity is not nearly as important as America's being more like other countries. I have great arguments with the fringe on the right....but they do not harbor ill will toward the military.

Nicely done.

Ayers participated in a bombing
of the Pentagon. Of that day, Ayers wrote: Everything was
absolutely ideal on the day I bombed the Pentagon. The sky was
blue. The birds were singing. And the bastards were finally going to get what was coming to them.

I'm sure Osama's pals felt the same way on 9/11 that Obama's buddy recounted years later.
