When I listen to him speak, it makes me remember Bill Clinton. Didn't like Clinton much, disagreed with a lot of his policies. But I sure did like listening to him talk.
I'm the opposite. I liked a few things he said (charters, preventive care) -- but it was hard to imagine anyone who could not connect in some way. Harness the wind, the air, the sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely a rapid delivery. I liked it. He kinda talked through some of the applause, which I also liked. It was nice to hear him be a little upbeat and confident.
he's not President Obama's 'speaking caliber' though. Do you think after 4 years of President Obama, people will think the "o golly" delivery is refreshing?
I like his delivery too, but when he gets to the dangers out there and scary earmarks, sounds a bit like he's telling the little ones a very frightening bed time story.
we studied these speaking styles in linguistics. The merlot swilling crowd is very mistrustful of the 'just folks' delivery. They seem to take it as a personal affront to their intellectualism
Couldn't watch Nancy P jumping up and down like a cheerleader at a basketball game does everytime his/her team scores! I'll look forward to the Post vs. Fox News analysis tomorrow . . .
CCE--Speaker Pelosi kills me. I still can't get a single Dem friend to explain to me what it is about her that gained her that seat. Was she particularly persuasive? Particularly policy oriented? What was it?
A better amendment to the Senate voting rights bill could be to allow DC residents to vote in Nancy Pelosi's district in California (instead of Maryland) - and get rid of her! Egads, could she be more smug? I was so distracted and disgusted, I couldn't watch the speech.
While I didn't join you all for The President's speech, I love the "dialogue" here.
Few comments.
1. I agree with CCE on Pelosi... I was starting to wonder if someone had put some type of electric stimulator in her seat; she was jumping up and down way too much.
2. Secondly, I too wonder how she got elected the the Speaker's position.
The Blog: A compendium of thoughts on politics, world affairs, economics, pop culture and social issues, from the center right perspective of me--Bryan McGrath--a University of Virginia graduate who spent a career in the world's greatest Navy keeping my mouth shut about politics and social issues (ok, publicly keeping it shut). Those days are over! Pull up a chair and chime in where you will. Keep it clean, civil, concise and relevant.
The Fish: The fish is a "coat of arms" for the blog, symbolizing three formative influences in the life of the blog founder. The first is his experience at the University of Virginia--symbolized most importantly by the fish itself, or a caricature of a "Wahoo", the fish we have acquired as an informal nickname. Additionally there is the sword, the sword of a Cavalier. It is not wielded in a threatening manner, as this is a civil blog. But it is there, should it be needed. Thirdly, there is the influence of 21 years in the Navy--symbolized by the anchor on the Wahoo's fin (and again, the sword) . Finally, there is the bowler, tuxedo, and monocle, symbols of a refined, intellectual conservatism, or what I seek to encourage here.
The Policy: I take FULL responsibility for what I write. I will not be held responsible for the content of my comments section--as long as it is civil and passes my own inscrutable sniff tests, it will appear. If the comment offends you, that is on you.

I'm glad he's going to put war costs on the books...supplementals have always been dishonest.
Right...cause our friends have been so excited to help in Afghanistan....
One message? That was three.
Have I been pronouncing Pakistan wrong all these years?
Yes. You have. Pahk-istan
Oh Barf
This is reminding me of the Post series about how Guantanamo creates terrorists from nice shepherds
I HATE the phrase "challenges of the 21st century"
..stand at this crossroads of history... trite.
except the ones without TV
crossroads of history has a nicer ring
We have the whole world...in our hands!
great story....great man....great act.
Not a bad political thing that the Gov of SC has been critical of the stimulus....
He's really done a good job with this. A very good job.
When I listen to him speak, it makes me remember Bill Clinton. Didn't like Clinton much, disagreed with a lot of his policies. But I sure did like listening to him talk.
C-SPAN giving a hug play by play. Just hugged Lieberman, but no Michael - Fredo kiss. Darn.
I'm the opposite. I liked a few things he said (charters, preventive care) -- but it was hard to imagine anyone who could not connect in some way. Harness the wind, the air, the sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good point, it really was a beautiful piece of theatre -- I expected much more doom and gloom, but that was positively uplifting.
Notice how much more rapid his delivery was? Took me by surprise.
Definitely a little something for everyone....but tht's what its all about.

Fredo kiss, thairish....! excellent
Ghost--Thairish is one of the best...
Jon Kyl on Fox--can't give the President some props. You gotta do that. You gotta give him props, then cut him down.
Jindal is 37?
Yes. 37. Jindal's got a tough job....always hard to follow the president, no big chamber, no applause, etc.
maybe he'll have canned applause in the background
Jindal talks really fast...all the time. Hope he doesn't speak too fast this time...
heeer's bobby!
Jindal's doing well
I have never heard him speak before. Oh my.
he's not President Obama's 'speaking caliber' though. Do you think after 4 years of President Obama, people will think the "o golly" delivery is refreshing?
Unfortunate sound quality.
After 8 years of President Obama, we'll not want to be preached at, that's for sure...
so you are hearing feedback, too?
I like the golly gee stuff
Oh, is that it?
Bobby Jindal likes charter schools, SKai
I do as well; but many Americans look down their snoot at it.
Yess! Good on him! Tho I do think those are about the only schools still functioning down there. They do love their KIPP Academies
Yes...Sarah Palin was a golly gee type...but she doesn't seem to have his brain.
I like his delivery too, but when he gets to the dangers out there and scary earmarks, sounds a bit like he's telling the little ones a very frightening bed time story.
Laissez les bon temps rouler.
Slumdog President!

Yep. An affront.
Jindal getting SAVAGED on Fox
who do you think wrote that speech, Bryan? Is that Party or Jindal's personal stand?
I read earlier today that Jindal wrote it himself.

Love it, CCE! Your blog's a winner!
Ok everyone, Good night...Sorry about the technical issue on Twitter.
Night Bryan; that was fun! Thanks!
