"...he couldn't bring himself to call Glass his girlfriend, much less make her his wife -- and those commitment issues certainly didn't improve with the announcement in 2002 that she was expecting."
Dr. Mudge: Commitment issues, interesting.
"Whitney, who can be shy at times, was hesitant to walk into the classroom alone..."
Dr. Mudge: Shy at times, interesting.
"I wasn't ready for a relationship," he says.
Dr Mudge: Not ready for relationships, interesting.
"Whitney went on to have three more sons with other women."
Dr. Mudge: So let me see if I have this straight. At the heart of this WaPost-would-have-you-believe "love story" is a highly-paid professional athlete with all the means in the world to provide for his child with this woman but although Mr. Whitney has "commitment issues", is "shy at times" and "not ready for a relationship", he has absolutely no compunction about making not one but THREE MORE BABIES with other women while ignoring the first one (and one would likely be safe in assuming a similar outcome for the subsequent trio).
I guess in the world the Washington Post so desperately wishes to be real, a baby is NOT a commitment, removing one's clothes and exchanging reproductive fluids is a natural consequence of shyness and if a grown man is just not quite ready for a relationship with a woman, it is quite acceptable for that same grown man NOT to have a relationship with any reproductive result of his shyness with her.
In my world, he's a disgrace. But the Washington Post just made it, not only acceptable, but lauditory. Well done WaPost. I can't wait for the follow up article after he dumps his wife when she finds out about some future bouts of shyness around other women.
Want a feel good story that is real? Why aren't you writing about the young men and women who are doing great things in Iraq and Afghanistan every single day that garbage like Whitney are contaminating the planet with their irresponsibility? I wouldn't flush this "love story" down my toilet for fear of contaminating my septic tank.
The Blog: A compendium of thoughts on politics, world affairs, economics, pop culture and social issues, from the center right perspective of me--Bryan McGrath--a University of Virginia graduate who spent a career in the world's greatest Navy keeping my mouth shut about politics and social issues (ok, publicly keeping it shut). Those days are over! Pull up a chair and chime in where you will. Keep it clean, civil, concise and relevant.
The Fish: The fish is a "coat of arms" for the blog, symbolizing three formative influences in the life of the blog founder. The first is his experience at the University of Virginia--symbolized most importantly by the fish itself, or a caricature of a "Wahoo", the fish we have acquired as an informal nickname. Additionally there is the sword, the sword of a Cavalier. It is not wielded in a threatening manner, as this is a civil blog. But it is there, should it be needed. Thirdly, there is the influence of 21 years in the Navy--symbolized by the anchor on the Wahoo's fin (and again, the sword) . Finally, there is the bowler, tuxedo, and monocle, symbols of a refined, intellectual conservatism, or what I seek to encourage here.
The Policy: I take FULL responsibility for what I write. I will not be held responsible for the content of my comments section--as long as it is civil and passes my own inscrutable sniff tests, it will appear. If the comment offends you, that is on you.

Ahhhhhhmmmmm. Ahhhhhhhmmmmm. Namaste.
I feel better now. Sorry for the outburst.
Well said, Mudge. This is a disgrace.
And I was hoping The Princess Bride allusion would warrant my reading the link. Bait and switch at its worst!
He was hesitant to walk into the classroom because of the potential numbers of paternity cases he would be served.
