Well I'm gonna go ahead and tell you, I applied for the position. I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting for the call. But I'll tell you this, if by some strange happening I do get the job, that damn wall is coming down!
"The graduate of James Madison College at Michigan State University with a doctoral degree in sociology from the University of Chicago is also a U-M sociology professor and co-author of six books and 50 scholarly articles. She's a scholar in labor force demographics, with a focus on consumer debt and economic marginality."
Great, yet another product of Chicago, even if later in life, with a career of useless feel-good academic degrees now in charge of my state's flagship university. Chicago is fast displacing Hollywood as my candidate for "least redeeming US city". She looks as if she is a nice, friendly lady. And of course, she appears to have met the number one qualification: two X chromosomes. (Unless of course, Anonymous was correct, then all bets are off).
Milton Friedman was the man at the University of Chicago for a good while. Their econ. dept. was the best. But I think the lefties have taken over now. I miss Uncle Miltie. When that man died it should have been front page news in every paper in the world. AND he should have been given a State funeral. No greater thinker in my lifetime. Oh, gee sorry...you guys were talking about UVA. My thoughts are...eh... who cares?
Sorry CW. Good luck with your new Prez. You guys got a lot of new faces on campus. New coaches everywhere, new Prez. Now if you would recruit some coeds that didn't all look like middle guards in a 3-4 defense, the school might be worth going to.
Thanks for noticing. Yes I dropped my name. I thought it prudent. As you may know the Hammer household it well protected with various firearms, cricket bats and hurling sticks (my wife's contribution to our security). But I may be vulnerable to cyber-terrorism. We only use Macs here (we're better than you) but you never know in these trying times what deranged freakazoid asshole will come out the wordwork and try to compromise one's good name. So, I've decided "The Hammer" will have to do. And to all those leftist thugs out there who wish me harm, I say this, don't even try it. I will cook your spleen and feed it to my deer hounds. Have a wonderful evening.
Hammer, I'll keep my comments to myself regarding Virginia's women but will say they can't compete with UCLA or Texas...did you see the cheerleading squads at the BCS game? The Longhorn cheerleaders made their Alabama counterparts look like Arnold Horshak, Juan Epstein, and the rest of Mr. Kotter's sweathogs by comparison.
The Tide may have won the Title, but, as always, the Horns had the babes.
Don't get me started on the sorry state of college cheerleading. They're all flat-chested gymnasts now..and pig ugly. Year in and year out I think USC has the best. I thought Texas's cheerleaders looked like they should be working the poll. They were kinda slutty looking, which in the proper context ain't half bad but you want something a little more wholesome at the college level. USC's girls are typically fresh and pretty and radiant and curvy. And those sweaters, my goodness.
Hammer - "...hurling sticks"? They do make a great personal defense weapon. When swung with the blade parallel to the ground, you're able to generate tremendous "bat speed" through the hitting zone! And they're as hard as hell too!
The Blog: A compendium of thoughts on politics, world affairs, economics, pop culture and social issues, from the center right perspective of me--Bryan McGrath--a University of Virginia graduate who spent a career in the world's greatest Navy keeping my mouth shut about politics and social issues (ok, publicly keeping it shut). Those days are over! Pull up a chair and chime in where you will. Keep it clean, civil, concise and relevant.
The Fish: The fish is a "coat of arms" for the blog, symbolizing three formative influences in the life of the blog founder. The first is his experience at the University of Virginia--symbolized most importantly by the fish itself, or a caricature of a "Wahoo", the fish we have acquired as an informal nickname. Additionally there is the sword, the sword of a Cavalier. It is not wielded in a threatening manner, as this is a civil blog. But it is there, should it be needed. Thirdly, there is the influence of 21 years in the Navy--symbolized by the anchor on the Wahoo's fin (and again, the sword) . Finally, there is the bowler, tuxedo, and monocle, symbols of a refined, intellectual conservatism, or what I seek to encourage here.
The Policy: I take FULL responsibility for what I write. I will not be held responsible for the content of my comments section--as long as it is civil and passes my own inscrutable sniff tests, it will appear. If the comment offends you, that is on you.

You can bet it won't be Newt.
So the Heels get whupped by a AA high school in Charleston, then beat the Hokies? There is a God and He doesn't hail from Blacksburg or Chapel Hill.
Q: What's the difference between the Dean Dome and a porcupine?
A: A porcupine has 21,000 pricks on the outside
Well, you were right! Who is T(h)eresa Sullivan??
Looks like the tranny comment was spot on
Perhaps we should give the Board credit for not being influenced by looks and fashion sense?

Hiring female presidents is all the rage in the upper/upper tier of schools. UVA couldn't be seen as anything less....

Um...who cares? How about the guy who founded and maintains the blog on which you spend a significant amount of your free time?

Hammer--do you have a new name? Are you just "The Hammer" now?
John S
You sure it ain't newt in a wig?
From the UVA press release
"Sullivan's research now focuses on labor force demography with emphasis on economic marginality...
WTF is economic marginality?
....and, shockingly, I agree with Hammer... Friedman was the Man.
