"Single Mom" Discharged From the Army

Ridiculous. Love the "Single Mom" headline. You know who we have to blame for this? George W Bush and his White House Communications Director--Karen Hughes. She's the one who convinced GWB to talk about "Moms and Dads" in speeches, not "parents". She's the one who convinced him to talk about "single Moms" rather than "single mothers. All to sound more heartwarming, more folksy, more sympathetic.

So now, we have a no-load soldier (I'm sorry to have to use that term--she's not a soldier) who just decided not to go. She's a "cause celebre" and the Huffington Post uses the Bush term "Single Mom" to help us frame the story--because she's really not a no-load getting over on the system, being paid to serve her country while she instead decides to grow her family without necessary support--she's a "single mom"!

Coulter's last book talked about how "single moms" are the cancer that is killing America. I could not agree more. There is nothing, not drugs, not poverty, NOTHING that has more societal costs than single motherhood.

Single moms are not the cancer killing America. Holding them up as tragic figures and elevating them to hero status is what's so ridiculous.

If not the "cancer that is killing America" along with single mothers, what are the single (or elsewhere married) fathers of these children?

Should there be compulsory sterilization for all unmarried male soldiers (with reversal treatment at discharge) and enforced contraception (plus required abortion if contraception is unsuccessful) for unmarried female soldiers and -- if both are serving -- the same requirements for both married partners?

What's the Army's position on service alternatives: can a person with a 'hardship' situation, such as having a sick spouse or dependent or being a single parent (male or female) be forced to assume a local assignment with less responsibility and compensation as an alternative to combat service?

Why not apply an in-service deferment system in this case (some commenters on the article mentioned common and high-profile Vietnam-era draft deferments)? If it's appropriate to defer combat service if one has dependent parents or a pregnant wife, it seems that taking care of a small child as a single parent would be an even more dire and worthy need or 'hardship'.

The remarkable thg is that these stories ARE SO RARE! I had single parent Sailors working for me who almost always managed to do their duty. I agree this person (she doesn't deserve the dignity of "soldier") is a no-load who got off easy for her derelictiono of duty. I fear for her child.

I find it laughable that anyone would consider my mother the cancer that is killing America. Especially considering the fact that she raised five successful, law abiding, tax paying sons all on her own after their father skipped town. Brilliant insight Ms. Coulter.

This woman soldier is no hero, and she is not the typical single mother. She signed up for the service. She should fulfill her obligation. She is the poster child for the use of birth control.

The cancer here is the perpetuating the myth that lack of personal accountability doesn't matter and that right and wrong are just relative.
At some point in history a person's word used to be their bond. ...I suppose you always COULD have weaseled out of any contract (or mortgage, or family) you wanted to but there was a negative stigma associated to it. Now that's just 'another option.'
...Plus, if I'm wrong in that there is no right and wrong, then I'm not so wrong am I?

Had this been a white male single "pop", he would have been court-martialed, and justifiably so, without hesitation. I guess this is just another case where minorities in the Army have yet to enjoy equality.

check out the "thatblackgirl" blog site. not much sympathy from the military women that follow the site. Not, I suspect, a very conservative crowd either.

Jesus, read the book. Single mothers cost the Holy living Hell out of us. They suck resources, they produce welfare mother and criminals and on and on. Paul said his father skipped town. Paul you'll be happy to know that statistically widows and single once MARRIED mothers produce offspring indistinguishable from two parent families.
I don't have time to make the argument in full. Read the book, it's pretty good and it's in paperback now.

When I was a kid, bad actions resulted in bad consequences. Unwed pregnancy was frowned upon by society and pregnant single girls and women were somewhat shunned. Girls were taught to save their virginity for their husband.

A pregnant unwed female was a rarity and if an unwed teen or young woman became pregnant, they did not flaunt their pregnancy and society did not celebrate it by throwing them baby showers. It was a time in America society when shame still existed (since destroyed by the liberal left).

Rather than remain at home until their pregnancy was noticeable, they would tell people that a distant relative in a far off state was suffering through a troubled pregnancy so they were going there to help them.

Nine months later they would return home telling everybody that the relative had died in child birth so they were going to raise the child.

Throughout the process, society was not asked to approve of or provide monetary support for an unwed mother.

It was a time when society expected and encouraged moral behavior and most definitely did not celebrate and provide monetary support which in and of themselves served as a deterrent.

I think that most of us can differentiate between a widow or a woman who's POS husband walked out on the family and that cancerous subculture in our society in which single motherhood is the rule, not the exception.
