Goldwater's Ghost suggested that I consider offering merchandise...something I've given some thought to. Gotta have a logo if you're going to do that--so here's one....what are your thoughts?

No way. The Flag is the Flag. No modification for a commercial needs. You can use the Flag in a logo, but leave the design as is.
It's a good start. Personally, I'm not crazy about messing with the flag, but that's just me.
I was thinking more of a cartoonish icon (think Playboy). But, then again, I've been called a walking cartoon. A play on the Conservative Wahoo name, like a fish wearing a bowler, Churchillian-like, and a tag line along the lines of "The Conservative Wahoo - Swimming Against the Currents".
Slap that on tee shirts, mugs and mouse pads, and away we go.
Not exactly a Don Draper pitch, but you get the point.
Use of the flag is ok in my opinion since it is in good taste. That said, where is the hook to UVA (colors, jefferson, dome...something that does not infringe on the current logos used of course). The downside is that use of a UVA inspired logo would tend to brand your site as elitist, duke loosing, and groh loving! Go Terps!
I'm envisioning a big "C" (which looks much like an "O"), perhaps with some red and white stripes swooping across the bottom. You know, something that inspires Hope.

The Blog: A compendium of thoughts on politics, world affairs, economics, pop culture and social issues, from the center right perspective of me--Bryan McGrath--a University of Virginia graduate who spent a career in the world's greatest Navy keeping my mouth shut about politics and social issues (ok, publicly keeping it shut). Those days are over! Pull up a chair and chime in where you will. Keep it clean, civil, concise and relevant.
The Fish: The fish is a "coat of arms" for the blog, symbolizing three formative influences in the life of the blog founder. The first is his experience at the University of Virginia--symbolized most importantly by the fish itself, or a caricature of a "Wahoo", the fish we have acquired as an informal nickname. Additionally there is the sword, the sword of a Cavalier. It is not wielded in a threatening manner, as this is a civil blog. But it is there, should it be needed. Thirdly, there is the influence of 21 years in the Navy--symbolized by the anchor on the Wahoo's fin (and again, the sword) . Finally, there is the bowler, tuxedo, and monocle, symbols of a refined, intellectual conservatism, or what I seek to encourage here.
The Policy: I take FULL responsibility for what I write. I will not be held responsible for the content of my comments section--as long as it is civil and passes my own inscrutable sniff tests, it will appear. If the comment offends you, that is on you.

"NEVER" mess with the flag. Use a cartoon drawing of a Naval Officer at the bow of his ship with a spy glass looking for news.
All of you would-be ad agency types are welcome to provide a drawing of your ideas....
That's what the Art Department is for; I'm from Creative...
Hire one of them there graphic arteests.
I agree with most - don't mess with the flag.

I like GG's idea--a Fish, standing up, with a Bowler and a Monacle.
