Wrath of God – Meh…Wrath of Islam – Well, That’s Different

Filmmaker Roland Emmerich has admitted cutting a scene depicting the destruction of the Kaaba in Mecca from his new end-of-the-world film 2012 because he feared reprisals from the Islamic world.

"I wanted to do that...but my co-writer said that I will not have a fatwa on my head because of a movie," said the 53 year-old director. "And he was right. We have to all in the Western world think about this."

Emmerich's sensitivity does not appear to extend to Christian symbols, as the Christ the Redeemer statue's destruction is very prominently displayed in the film's trailer. "You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you do this with an Arab symbol, you would have a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit what the state of this world is," said Emmerich, who himself admits to being against organized religion.

And terrified of one in particular, it would seem.

I was hoping you might segue to a discussion of the Crusades and treat us to yet another "Holy Grail" youtube clip.

John S - a couple interesting points in your linked article:
1. who knew militants ate pudding?
2. the disarming of civilians in kashmir directly resulted in an increase in bear and leopard attacks on humans (in other words, take away our right to bear arms and a bear will take away our right arms -- wonder if CW thinks it's just a quaint relic of colonial times now?)

Mudge - I'll bet the pudding was the British variety (black pudding or blood pudding), and not the sweet stuff momma made on the stove variety.

I'm so over fatwas.

Don't we all have fatwa's on us by extremist definition. Ah, just replace it with a Catholic Church. The director should be ok.

We don't mind if you make laws to ban people showing destruction of Christian monuments in movies, it's up to you. Just let us have our laws.

Nowrin, that'd be fine as long as you only wanted to apply your "laws" where you live. The problem starts when muslims want to export their sharia and impose it on folks in other countries whose people have chosen to reject the 4th Century in favor of a more enlightened system of jurisprudence.
