Just noticed that the teams are set for the World Series, one of whom is my hometown team, the other is a team I have never heard of.
More importantly, I wasn't aware that baseball was still played in the US.
Those who criticize soccer for its lack of "action", simply must have to try and defend baseball.

I will admit that if the grand old game is not in your blood it is difficult to get it in there. At the same time, if it is your blood it is tough to get it out. My son and one daughter enjoy a deep love of the game. I believe it is the greatest game ever created. My wife hates it and can't sit through a single inning.
I do like women's soccer but not as much as baseball.
Seriously though CW, anon makes a very good point about baseball being in your blood. Unfortunately, it isn't in yours. But that's OK, you do have many other redeeming qualities, too numerous to list in the space and time allotted!
Baseball is like the religion one grows up with. You have one group of people who still practice the faith of their youth, many years into adulthood - they still have a deep love baseball. Another group leaves the faith of their youth - and in adulthood turn to soccer and don't care too much for the baseball anymore. The last group, leaves the faith of their youth as a young adult only to return to their original faith later on in adulthood. These folks turned to soccer and enjoyed it for many years. But something was lacking with the soccer and they turned back to the sport of their youth and re-embraced baseball.
It is the last group that understands that if one wants to see a game with 22 participants on the field at once, they should be doing more than running around. They should be knocking the crap out of each other while running around and that is why we have American Football, Rugby and Australian Rules Football for a lovely time in the autumn and early winter. We have baseball for the rest of the year.
If I need a fix of 22 folks running around in shorts, it had better be a women's soccer match and they all better have long hair ... in ponytails.

doc - re the reference, only with the help of google. but i do recall watching the episode if not the quote. by the way, i was a phillies phan back when i was also a monkees fan. then i learned the monkees weren't a real group and the phillies well...i better quit while i'm ahead. actually, used to hang out at the reading phillies watching Ronnie Allen play in hopes that one day his better-known brother Richie would come by. Wouldn't you know it, one night I didn't go, he showed up and my buddies got his autograph on their gloves. I believe baseball lost it's allure for me from then on...that plus getting hit in the eye with a pitch and joining a swim team where i learned all the girls wore speedos too. much better. much much better than baseball.
Mudge: Mmm..speedos, I can't argue with speedos.
As far as the popcult ref, we used to say that in HS, freshman/sophmore year (73-75, when CW was a little Wahoo). It wasn't until recently that I learnt that it was from the Monkees. We probably heard it from someone's older brother/sister.
