Say It Aint So Joe – Conservative Heroes in the Age of Obama
Every day the Dow continues to tank, the likelihood of an Obama victory increases as the political relevance of the Republican Party decreases. Assuming a worse-case scenario on November 4th, who will be the next generation of Conservative leaders to emerge to piece together the shattered remnants of a once-proud GOP?

Unless and until the present conservative members of the GOP have the intestinal fortitude to step forward and call a spade a spade (no pun intended) we may never see an emergence of the GOP. But with the liberal left in charge, we will damned sure see the demise of the once great United States of America.

Smoothfur, so much negativity. There are a bunch of bright young conservatives poised to emerge on the national stage-Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty, Eric Cantor...our girl Sarah will be back and Newt Gingrich will resurface. The present conservatives in Congress will have to be loud, angry and resistant the next two years while the Dems try to reshape the country into their dream of America as a socialist state. If they're effective, the 2010 elections will help swing back some GOP seats and get us on the road to recovery.
Smoothfur - I think you're on the right track. It will be awhile before the GOP finds its way out of the forest - it'll first have to purge itself of center-left, "Big Tent" political elements.
Sally - your optimism is comforting. I agree that Jindal, Pawlenty and Cantor are bright spots, but I'm not sure of Palin's political shelf life beyond this election cycle if the ticket loses. It would be neat to see Newt re-emerge.

Instead of wringing your hands in despair, get out and do something instead. Go to McCain's website. They have a 'voter2voter' thing-you can click on it and you'll get a list of 20 undecided voters in your neighborhood. They'll even provide you a little walking map! Take the dog for a walk and in half an hour, you'll have the opportunity to talk to undecided voters. If you can't bring yourself to offer full-throated support of Sen McCain, you can at least talk about the dangers of one-party control. It doesn't take long, and you may find yourself cheered by the number of folks who are, in fact, supporting him. I'm serious, folks, particularly if you're in a purple state-even if you're in PA. (While I think it's weird there's campaigning there when the polls look so bleak, internal polling must be telling them something else or they wouldn't waste their time). Volunteers really can make the difference.
Thanks for the pep talk Sally. I think you may be on to something in PA - remember, external polls had Obama by 7 in the days leading up to the primary. When all the votes were counted, Clinton crushed him. Perhaps the McCain people are seeing the same.
I will make it a point to visit the McCain site.
My very first vote cast for president was for Barry Goldwater. I have been active in Republican politics with both my time and my money since bfore America was blessed to have the sainted Ronald Regan win the presidency. My heart soared in 1994 when Newt led the way to a Republican majority in congress with "The Contract with America". But, unfortunately my heart was broken when those very same Republicans lost touch with the reason they were elected in the first place and instead became more like the Democrats that they had replaced. My negativity is born from watching the average American voter throw their support to those who promise them "FREE STUFF" at the expense of others without the knowledge of or care for the consequences to our country. I believe Atlas may well be in the act of shrugging. There may well be a bunch of bright young conservatives poised to emerge on the national stage such as Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty, Eric Cantor, Sarah Palin etal, but by thae time Obama and his Democrat majority in both houses get through there will be little short of a miracle that these good people could accomplish.
Don't be too surprised if the good CW tries his hand at some legislative duties. And if he does start a campaign, just think how much money each of us will make just to keep our little secrets out of the press. BTW, GG, you're doing great as CW's "bloggy double". Thanks for filling in.
