A Horrible Crime At UVA
This story really, really bothers me. There are so many elements to my angst--the obvious one--the death of a beautiful, accomplished young woman. Then there is the discontinuity of this kind of crime in the place that I knew for my four years there. Then there's the element of privilege, both in terms of the assailant's background and the cloistered world of star athletes in premier sports programs. So much wasted here, so horribly wasted.

I was wondering when you'd get around to this one. If this were football players getting busted with pot I'd rag your ass down to the ground, but this is real. It's a very shocking and tragic situation.
Really very, very sad.
From USA Today re: the elite athlete, a handsome child of privledge.
There is so much we don't yet know about this tragedy, but disturbing details are beginning to emerge from Huguely's not-so-distant past. He was arrested near the campus of Washington & Lee University, 70 miles from UVa., in November 2008 for public swearing, intoxication and resisting arrest. The arresting officer, R.L. Moss, said she needed to use a Taser to subdue him.
She told The New York Times that Huguely threatened to "kill everyone" at the police department. "He was by far the most rude, most hateful and most combative college kid I ever dealt with," Moss said.
An air of entitlement that reminds me of the violent tantrums and hobbies of Uday and Qusay Hussein.
